Trip to Southern Indiana August 6 & 7
For the first weekend of August Corvette Indy member Mary McConnell had used her connections to the Southern Indiana area to plan, along with John and Marg Herder and Steve Head, the unique trip for club members to Indiana's only Antebellum mansion that had been restored at Cedar Farm near Laconia on the Ohio river. The trip started at the former Bob Evans location off of Exit 99 of I65. The nearly thirty Corvettes and a couple of metal cars were ready to leave at the appointed 8 time and left in 3 separate groups. The trip went fairly well until the first group encountered a Indiana road crew chip and sealing IN 135 south of Brownstown. They started through it but through phone calls the second and third group turned around ended up taking IN 39 to IN 56 to get back to Salem and the stop at Arby's. From there the group headed south hitting another chipped and sealed section which slowed the travels. The two groups finally got to Cedar Farm a little after the first group to enjoy the catered lunch and tours of the grounds graciously provided by Gayle Cook. Be sure to read the PDF files linked to the Cedar Farm picture page. After the group had lunch and toured the property they broke in to smaller groups and headed back to Corydon Comfort Inn to rest up. Around 5:30 the members then headed to the evening dinner's location of Merry Ledges. Once there they were treated to another catered dinner and a great location near the Blue River. Be sure to check out the Merry Ledges pictures too. Unfortunately Saturday had been hot and very humid while Sunday was a bit better the day was still hot but a bit less humid. On Sunday everyone was pretty much on their own for getting back to the Indianapolis area with Susie Hale leading a small group to the Overlook restaurant and then a scenic trip back. Every single member had a great time and certainly thanks Mary, Steve, and John & Marg for setting up the trip up.
On Tuesday John Herder sent the following report on their Sunday travels with few additional pictures below:
On Sunday, we and the Burkhardts went to the Abe Lincoln National Park, near Dale, IN. The Visitor's Center has a very well done film about Abe Lincoln, a lot of mementos and letters. Here are a few photos from there.
#1 Visitor Center #2 Nancy Lincoln's grave. #3 Log cabin on the property.
