2nd Annual Trip to Overlook Restaurant
On Sunday, September 16, Susie held her second annual trip to Overlook Restaurant. Starting from the Bob Evan’s at exit 99 off of I65 the 11 Corvettes lined up at 8:15 for the drive south. In this year’s group were host Susie and her navigator Terry, Mark & Donna, Doug & Mary, John & Dianna, Bill & Erika, Pat & Carolyn, Andy & Sarah, Brent & Betty, Dean & Zoe, Butch & Tammy, and Butch’s brother Drew & his son Levi. The day was sunny, but a bit cool for the start down I65 for our “straight road” portion of the trip.
Once we turned off of I65 south of the Edinburgh shops the route then started to twist and turn to Bedford, where we made a well needed rest stop. The stop was also planned by Susie so that she could pick up a persimmon pudding, as we would not be coming back by this route. Once we left the gas station and restaurant we headed south toward Overlook Restaurant, but of course not by the most direct route. Just to make it interesting a minor misdirection and detour was made and our only turn around spot was a church parking lot. Once back on the correct route, we made it to the restaurant after many tight turns and blind corners. With Butch bringing up the rear (so he could go fast to catch up) Tammy would make many comments about the drive with many whee’s and whoopee’s as we went over hills and around corners.
At the Overlook Restaurant we had a row of tables at the front by the windows overlooking the amazing view of the Ohio River. We saw several barges heading north; with one passing the other while we were at lunch. When done with lunch and after more group pictures were taken we headed on to the Ohio River lock which is viewed from the Eagles Bluff Overlook park. At this point some tops went on as it started to sprinkle, but we actually never got any rain at all. The ‘short’ drive was only an hour of more twists and turns mainly on SR66. Some were speculating that we had somehow gotten on to Route 66, and were on our way to LA.
The view of the lock from the bluff was spectacular but unfortunately there were no barges going through the lock this year. At least Susie was able to give lessons on persimmons as a tree was by the overlook and dropping the nuts. Several tried the sweet nut meat, after being warned not to pick them from the tree but to only use ones that had already dropped. With the nature lesson done we got back in to the Corvettes for our next leg of the trip to the French Lick area and the West Baden Springs hotel for our afternoon ice cream and rest using the rockers on the porch. Also while at the hotel, Brent talked the management in to giving us a tour of a room and history of the rebuilding of the hotel. For several this was their first trip to the French Lick resort area and will certainly not be their last.
Once the full group was rounded up, we sort of headed back north again not taking the most direct routes. We did finally come to an intersection that crossed State Road 37 in Bedford, with a few now looking for gas eight of the group broke off and headed north on a ‘straight road’. Everyone at that point got on their radios and thanked Susie for the great ride. For many it was a 14 plus hour day, with 8.5 of that being in their Corvettes wandering the Southern part of Indiana.
All of us that were on the trip give a big thanks to Susie and Terry for planning and executing such a great trip and compacting it all in to one day. Hopefully more of the club members will make plans to join in on next year’s trip, which will possibly be a little later in the fall so all can enjoy the leaves turning.
