May 17 2015 - IMS Pole Day
This year's Penske and Central Indiana Dealers sponsored Pole Day event had 43 member Corvettes leaving from our starting point of Traders Point. The morning started early as we were trying to get to IMS by around 7:30 as the events were supposed to be moved up due to a rained out Saturday of qualifying. We got everyone signed in and then as soon as our escort showed up we headed off to gate 9A arriving at the requested time. Getting there early didn't work out as planned as an Indy Car had a crash during morning practice, which took over an hour to fix the catch fence that it had hit. During this period, we later found out, the track was planning on cancelling our cruise around the track. Through the persistence of Mike Quinn and other Chevrolet personnel we were finally allowed on the track once the repair was done. It was again good that we were at the head of the line as they had us go briskly around the track and then were held while the tail end of the over 300 Corvettes & Camaros got on to the track. We got another lap, but those in the middle got taken off with only getting a single lap. Of course during this period the IMS personnel were having us go quickly as they wanted the track cleared! Due to issues that the Indy Cars were having the planned speaker was delayed and lunch was served early. The buffet, as in past years, was catered by Ritz Charles with great food and service. Once done the pavilion cleared out as many headed to the garage area using the passes we all have been given and later watch the practice session. The rest headed home as the qualifying was being delayed until 3:15 and many didn't want to wait for the late start. It was a great day and everyone had their appetites filled and a lot of fun traversing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track.
