Jim Mero Carmel Visit 09/02
Jim Mero, the retired former lead Corvette ride & handling Dynamics Engineer, and his wife Terri made a visit to Carmel on their way home from his marathon trip to the Corvette show in Carlisle PA and then on to Bowling Green KY for the 25th Anniversary event. His stop in Carmel was to do upgrades on several member's C6 Corvettes with magnetic ride. This came about after Bill Lapham and Larry Greenwalt visited Jim Mero's home in Michigan this past June for the Magnetic Ride upgrade that Jim does. After getting back to Indiana both of them extolled the benefits of the new more compliant ride that they got. This made Jim Alvis interested in getting it after buying an '13 GS, so he got into contact with Jim Mero and worked with him, getting him to stop on the way home. They got Buddy Hodgdon with a ZR1 and new member Paul Amos and his GS to get theirs done too. Also Jim surprised Bill with another upgrade, as Jim had done a minor tweak since the original one was done. With having done over 70 upgrades the past few weeks the Mero's have it down to a science for the flashing of the controller. Once a Corvette pulls up Terri gets the VIN number and forms signed then plugs the communication cable in to the ODBC port. Then Jim picks the correct file to be downloaded and starts it up, roughly 4 minutes later the update is done with another minute or two wait for the final writing to the MRC controller. Once done several got Jim to sign either their engine cover or glove box door. During the morning Jim was regaling the group with stories of his record runs at 'The Ring' and different US tracks. He is especially proud of his 7:04 in the ZR1 with less than optimal tire warm up and other issues on his last track run in Germany. He also had other stories that he had told Jim and Bill the evening before when they were able to have dinner with the Mero's. For those that own C7's with Magnetic Ride you can thank Jim for the upgrades now available as he went through and reprogrammed all of them prior to his retirement once he was finished with the ZR1. A nice couple having a great time meeting all of their new Corvette friends as they travel around the country. Plus Jim Mero has come up with a upgrade to owners of C6 Corvettes.
