Another Run to Rick's
With a sunny sky, low humidity and the temperature heading to the upper 70s, it seemed like a perfect day for Greg & Donna to schedule a retiree & hooky players' drive n dine on Wednesday 10/1. The group met at Greg & Donna's and Merlin celebrated his 1st birthday by a short Frisbee exhibition in the front yard, catching everything Greg threw in fair territory and missing only the one Greg hooked into the bushes! By the time Merlin is 2 years old maybe Greg will have mastered the art of throwing it straight. Naw, not likely!
Twelve beautiful Corvettes left the neighborhood shortly after 1:30pm which later caused a neighbor to comment on how many nice cars he saw! Jim & Judi A, Jeff B, Dean & Zoe D, Wylie & Rita E, Jack H, Susie H & Terry S, Dick & Bonnie P, Rich P, Jim & Bonnie S, Phil & Anita V and Bob & Sherry W followed Greg out of the neighborhood and north on Spring Mill Road. Wylie blocked traffic so all left the neighborhood together and all made it through the stop light at 86th Street. From there they went through the 4-way stop sign at 91st Street and then west on 96th Street at the first traffic circle. That's where the fun began! A large truck got in front of Bob at 91st Street and he lost track of the Vette he was following so he continued north at 96th Street. Wylie started to follow him but was quickly corrected by the right seat navigation system that is available in all C7s as Rita reminded him that Greg had radioed that he was going west on 96th. By the time Greg got the word that they had lost a Vette the group was headed north on Ditch Road. Greg then took the group back east on 106th Street back to Spring Mill Road hoping to find Bob & Sherry. Wylie meanwhile retraced his path back down Ditch and east on 96th in case Bob turned around and went west on 96th. In fact Bob had done that but by the time Wylie got back to 96th Street, Bob had already passed that circle and continued west looking for a gaggle of Corvettes. The group found out later that the reason Bob didn't hear Greg's directions was his radio batteries were dead.
Meanwhile the group continued at a snail's pace up Spring Mill waiting for Wylie & Rita to catch up. Greg filled the time by calling Bob's cell phone but got a message that the party was not answering calls at that time. Turns out Bob's cell phone battery was dead too! No cell phone, no radio... does the song "lost in the 50s tonight" come to mind?
With no prayer of finding Bob the group continued after Wylie caught up but they had lost time with the traffic on Spring Mill so Greg dumped a plan to stop at Stuckey's for cider and turned south and eventually west on 116th Street. There was just enough traffic that with 11 Vettes the group was constantly infiltrated by rusty cars so progress was slow across 116th until they crossed Michigan Road. From there they went through Zionsville, south on Ford Road and west on 96th Street to get to Lafayette Road. From there they went west on 82ND Street and out into the country for some fun driving. After streaking around some nice curves the group headed back to civilization and pulled in the Rick's Boatyard parking lot only 5 minutes past their 3PM target. There standing on the side of Dandy Trail near the entrance to Rick's was a smiling and waving Sherry! Bob had given up on the group and followed his nose to the smell of some good dining and he and Sherry were waiting on the group to arrive and get serious about eating! Maybe Bob can't always find batteries that work but give credit where its due, he can certainly find food!
Rick's had the group's table ready outside and they dined overlooking the water and enjoyed the beautiful view, the fantastic weather, some great food and enjoyable conversation. It was a nice drive on a great day that was made all the nicer by the knowledge that it was the 1st of October and the number of days that nice for the balance of the year were limited! Hopefully the group can get a few more fun outings in yet this year!
