Phil's 63 Year Wait is Over!!
Phil Vickery, now 91, had 63 years ago put a down payment on what was supposed to be 1 of 100 mid engine Corvettes that Zora Duntov had hoped to build to meet the minimum requirements for SCCA racing. As all of us know, from Corvette history, GM did not let Zora build that batch of Corvettes and only a few prototypes then were done over the years. Phil left that deposit with that dealer and this fall was able to make use of it and order the first C8 in the club from them, as they were still in business. It arrived on March 13 with Phil checking it out as the dealer tech did the PDI before giving him the 'keys'. It could not have been a better day for a first drive as it was sunny and in the mid 40's. After picking wife Anita up he headed to his morning walking partner's house, Greg & Donna Bowron, for his first showing of the day. From there they headed to Bill & Erika Lapham's and arrived with just 38 miles on the odometer. Pictures were soon being taken of the beautiful RED Corvette. The Corvette is a Z51 optioned Torch Red coupe with Black 3LT interior. It is certainly a huge upgrade from what he would have gotten those long years ago. He of course showed off the engine and the rear trunk compartment along with the frunk in front. When using both there will be room for several smaller travel bags for a trip. Phil & Anita then headed to dinner at MCL where Bill Reynolds & Jim Alvis got a few more pictures. Finally to round out their trip around town they headed to Wylie & Rita Etscheid's where Wylie not only took several pictures he also got a couple of short videos of the C8 in action.
There are several other club members that have C8's on order and will be getting them soon. But there can only be one 'first' and after Phil's 63 year wait this one was certainly worth it!!
