Discovering Delphi
On Wednesday August 28 a small group consisting of Host Bob Y, Wylie E, and Bill & Erika L headed toward Delphi on a circuitous route from Bill & Erika's house. This was a planning trip by Bob to check Delphi out for a fall Sunday Drive N Dine. Since they wanted to use IN 38 for a portion of the trip, they headed to Mule Barn Road to get to Sheridan where they could pick up the intended route. Once underway they made good time to Frankfort, where a quick stop was made to further plan a bit longer route. They decided to stay on 38 until Mulberry (not Mayberry, but it could be) and headed north to IN 26 and back east to 421 and on in to Delphi. Once there Bob called Mayor Randy Strasser as he had been in contact with the Mayor to set up the fact finding meeting and see what they have to offer. It turned out that we had parked right in front of the restaurant that the mayor wanted to meet us at. He arrived with Kevin Kologinsky, the city's Community Development Director, and took the whole group to lunch at the Garden Gate Tea House. During lunch they gave us a bit of history of the city and what they are attempting to accomplish in the next 4 years having received a Stellar Project grant to refurbish the City. This is a rather large project that can be read about on the City's Website. The Tea House is on Main street and on the first floor of what is the Opera House, located on the third floor. We were later given a tour of the old, soon to be remolded, theater which will have a whole new building added at the back with modern stairs and elevators to access the upper floors. We had also gone to the Canal Museum which is simply amazing in it's size and amount of information about the canals of Indiana. At the museum location too is the tour boat dock, which we will take a cruise on when we return in the fall, and a few representative buildings of the canal heyday era. After touring the museum a bit (could have spent a lot more time there) we headed to the country club to check out their restaurant, as it would be the best place to have a group on a Sunday for lunch. After parting with Randy & Kevin, Wylie headed back south while Bob led Bill & Erika north east to wander the back roads of the area on to Logansport and then back down IN 29 and 421 to the north side of Indianapolis for a 150 mile route.
You should look forward to joining Bob and Barb this fall for a return to Delphi and all that it has to offer the club for a great day trip!
