2016 100th Race Pole Day 05/22
First special thanks to Brett Rozzi of our great sponsor Penske Chevrolet and Mike Quinn of Chevrolet Motor Corporation. Because of them Corvette Indy was able to take part in the Pole day festivities of the 100th running of the Indy 500. On a beautiful morning 33 Corvettes and double that number of members met at Traders Point for an early escorted drive to the track. With our three motorcycle police also there early we got an quick start to the track and were the first of the clubs to arrive. As always being first meant a bit longer wait, but with the beautiful day no minded. We even got some additional pr when member Shirley Berry called everyone to the front of the line for a Channel 13 live interview, with repeats later in the day. Once the interviews were done the total group of 265 plus Corvettes and Camaros headed on to the track for the lap around and then to be parked on Hulman Boulevard before heading in to the lunch area. Before lunch there were several speakers including Chief Camaro Engineer Al Oppenheiser as the 50th anniversary Camaro will pace the 100th 500. This year Roger Penske will be driving the Camaro pace car to celebrate his 50 years in the sport and close affiliation with Chevy and Camaros (remember Mark Donohue and their Trans-Am Camaro?). Also Jim Campbell who oversees Chevy racing spoke about Corvette and Camaro racing in 2016 plus the heated battle against Honda in the Indy Car series. Lunch was then served and fully enjoyed by all there. After the meal, many headed to seats on the track to watch practice while other made use of the garage passes included with their day's credentials. With unbelievable weather after a month of rain everyone at the track had a great day and are certainly looking forward to a Chevrolet win next Sunday.
