Elkhart - Fort Wayne Rallies 08/14
On Saturday afternoon August 13 four couples left the Indianapolis area for Goshen to stay overnight for the early morning rallies leaving Shanklin Park at 9 on Sunday morning. The rallies were being sponsored by the Elkhart Vette Set and Fort Wayne Corvette Cubs. Those on the trip were Butch & Tammy DeWitt, Tom & Nancy Piercy, Al & Terri Forey, and Bill & Erika Lapham in Corvettes representing the last 4 generations on the intermittently wet trip North. After getting to their motels and a bit of a rest the couples headed to the Das Essenhaus restaurant in Middlebury. There they met an Elkhart club couple, Dave & Wanda Buck, for dinner. Once they had completely filled themselves on the scrumptious Amish style buffet and toured the restaurant complex they headed to the Buck's house for a visit before heading back to their motels. Sunday dawned dry but still somewhat humid the group got registered and in line for the 6 rallies. The Elkhart club had a fun rally for the first half with the Fort Wayne holding one on the second half, with four poker rallies being run for the whole route. The route was through out the the country side between the two cities with very precise instructions so no one got lost. At the second check point, which was the beginning of the Fort Wayne section, we got to see Rich Robison's C2 which is in the process of being completed by Paul Clawson. Once at the rally end at Shoaff Park everyone was treated to a carry in lunch that was again very filling. After everyone had lunch the results were announced and the club's 4 couples did very well. There were several ties among the competitors with Butch & Tammy ending up with 2 first places one for the first rally after winning a 5 way tie breaker card draw and one of the poker rallies. Al & Terri also won two first places for poker rallies. The Forey's along with Bill & Erika had been in a three way tie for first on the second rally with Bill drawing a low card for third place and Al getting a second with his card draw. With a little better card drawing skills the club could have had 5 first places! Tom & Nancy also got into the drawings as there was a two way tie for 6th on the first rally with Bill & Erika. Tom won that draw for a good day of scoring by the club. There was a comment by the organizers that the questions might be a bit tougher next year. A fun weekend for the four couples with plans to attend next year being formulated as they headed south, getting back to the Indianapolis area by late Sunday afternoon.
