NCM 20th Anniversary Trip - Friday 8/29
Friday morning did not start out too well for a conventioneer from Florida as his C2 had to be towed away as it had engine timing issues. His wife then made the comment that they had a new one but he just had to drive this one on the trip. Our trip went well as a smaller group that was heading back to Indy headed over to Mammoth Cave National Park before heading north. Our first stop was to see a ferry that crosses a small river. When asked why there was no bridge the operator said that it would have to be such a large bridge due to the rise and fall of the river. He then pointed to the guide cable that the ferry was attached to and said that the water can reach that high approximately 15 feet above the current river lever. Our ride was short as he soon had a traffic jam of 3 cars waiting to get across the river. From there we headed to a old church and cemetery that had been there for 200 years. It is one of the last buildings standing from before park times as any others were torn down and the land went back to forest. From there we headed over to the Tour Center where there are many displays and a lot of information on the land structure of the area. A return trip is certainly needed. Once on the road after reviewing several travel apps it had been decided to head up I65 with hopes of little traffic backups. With everyone ready for lunch we stopped in Elizabethtown and a Shoney's for lunch. We also took the opportunity to fill up our gas tanks after getting our fill and headed on to Indy. Our only back up was typical I465 rush hour and most everyone was home by 5:30 after a great afternoon driving. A wonderful trip which will need to be repeated when the weather is cooler.
