2016 Main Event
The 27th edition of Corvette Indy's Main Event was held at the new location in the old airport parking lots just off of Sam Jones Expressway. This year the event was held over the June 4 & 5 weekend with the usual setup the Friday evening before. With the promise of a long and fast track this year we had 37 participants on Saturday and 43 on Sunday for a great increase over the previous year's mid 20's. Unfortunately the weather gods were not in a favorable mood for Saturday's events as intermittent started the day with a final thunderstorm shortening the day's runs. The wet morning had track cleaning going on until 10:15 for a bit later start but we had little problems other than weather slowing down times during the day. During the afternoon it was also determined that it would be safe to run three cars on the track at a time, which started to speed things up a lot. The track also actually dried a bit during the runs, but the rain intensified around 4 with a final downpour halting the event. This drenched the corner workers and also members that were running the booths. During the storm the wind also came up and had the ladies gamely holding on to the awnings that were trying to fly away. With the day washed out the competitors headed to their motor homes and motels while members headed home to dry out and get ready for day 2 of the weekend.
Sunday dawned with much better conditions mostly sunny but windy during the day. The running times were cut by a good 10 seconds or more per lap and with the three cars running at a time the 43 were done with their 14 runs by around 4 pm. This was about an hour and half longer than last year, not bad for almost double the drivers competing!
Below are pictures from Friday's setup with Saturday & Sunday on their own pages.
