Northern Indiana Saturday 7/29
To start Saturday off the traveling group met at the parking lot behind the Circle K at 151 st & US 31. As always there were the 'early birds' but everyone was there before 7:45 to sign the waiver, fill their gas tanks if needed, and use the station's facilities. The first group headed out just before 8 up US 31, stopping at just about every one of the routes remaining stop lights before hitting US 24. Along the way John & Diana joined in just North of where 931 & 31 come back together, for a group of 11 Corvettes & Linda's SUV. The group continued on their route of IN 19 to IN 14, and IN 13 to Syracuse after stopping for a break just North of Pierceton. At that point the second group caught up as they had made each of the stop lights! Once back underway soon everyone was at and filling the Channel Marker parking lot where pictures were taken by members and staff. Soon the lunch orders were placed as many were hungry. As lunch progressed there were many cars that cruised the parking lot looking the Corvettes over. After lunch the group took a circuitous route that took them by the Eli Lilly estate and the road in front that used to be a part of the Wawasee Gold course. Nothing like mega dollars at work. They then worked their way to IN 5 and up through Ligonier and it's murals on the buildings. Passing Bill & Erika's old house's driveway on the north edge of town they continued up IN 5 and got came to road closed barriers that meant a jog around that closure on true county roads with all of sights and smells of nearby Amish farms. Back on IN 5 they were soon in Shipshewana and arrived at the Farmstead Inn. Once checked in a number of the group headed out to local shops and other sights while some rested up before dinner. At 5:30 (OK, Larry it may have been 5:25) the group started rolling out and headed to Middlebury and the Das Dutchman Essenhaus complex for their magnificent buffet. There was ample parking behind their conference building, but a bit of a walk to the restaurant going by the many shops. Dinner was a great success, with many taking a piece of pie back for later in the evening. With the beautiful weather the trip back to the Inn was not structured as many stayed to walk the grounds and enjoy the shops before heading back.
