NCM Work Weekend Trip 08/27-28
Corvette Indy did their first 'work' trip in a number of years to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green over the August 27 & 28 weekend. With Paul Habecker planning the trip in the proceeding months including lining up the motel and Saturday evening dinner location along with contacting the museum about our willingness to assist the NCM with the preparations for their upcoming anniversary celebration. The trip was soon 'sold out' with nearly 50 members signing up. On the day of departure 41 were able to go and met at the Cracker Barrel in Edinburgh for an 8 AM sharp departure. The group consisted of 19 Corvettes and 2 metal car, the Sherman's had recently traded in their C6 towards a yet to be build '17 Grand Sport, while Greg & Donna had their companion Merlin in the Honda. With Bill leading as he had helped Paul check and recheck the route the group headed down I-65 then headed to 2 lane roads at Exit 50. The route took them down IN 135 into Kentucky's 79 and then 185 in to Bowling Green with a rest stop in Corydon. Once there and the Corvettes lined up around the circle the group had lunch and then were assigned their work jobs. A fairly large group were inside stuffing envelopes and creating welcome packets and such items. Another group of about 8 were led outside with most stacking bricks from old pallets to newer ones. The outside jobs also included power washing the front sidewalk, which Jerry Croy (our NCM ambassador) handily took to for the rest of the afternoon. The final job was scrubbing and rinsing off the yellow panels of the dome. Wylie and Tom 'gave up' their brick moving job to do that. Once the other brick movers were done they, after 2 were recruited to polish Indy car wheels, moved around to check on the panel cleaners and Wylie "Sawyer" was soon attempting to elicit the help of the others, extolling the 'pleasure' of the job. Basically though everyone that worked outside got overheated in the nearly 100 degree temps and humidity of the Kentucky summer afternoon and headed inside to cool off. As the jobs were completed the members checked out some of the museums new offerings and, of course, the opportunity to shop for Corvette items. Also while the two members were cleaning the Indy car wheels the 'Quilt Lady" introduced herself after she found that we were from the Indy area. Be sure to read the exploitation of her quilts in picture below. Soon the group started breaking off and heading for the motel and showers with a rest period before the evening's meal at Montana Grill. The meal was great and very much appreciated by everyone. Everyone then headed back to their motels to get ready the 7:45 morning's regrouping at the museum.
