Jim & Bonnie's Road Trip to California
Jim and Bonnie took a 3 week trip starting in the end of June to California, Jim's account follows:
We are just back from our California road trip. 5713 miles in our C6. Not a bad way to travel.
Our main reason for the trip was to attend the wedding of our nephew on June 29th. As luck would have it, the wedding was held outside near Merced CA just as a heat wave hit the state. The temperature was about 105° as the ceremony started at 4:00 p.m. The bridal party and the guests survived.
Bonnie wanted to visit Mt Rushmore, so we took a northern route home. We stopped to stretch our legs in Utah. A sign pointed to the Bonneville Salt Flats so we took off down the road to see what we could see. No racing that day. There was at least a foot of water on the flats.
We got to Mt Rushmore in the evening in time to see the ceremony where they light the mountain. We went back the next day to see it in the daylight. A very impressive sight day or night. The highlight of the drive was when we came around a corner and were met by about 10 Corvettes going the other way. Lots of waves and smiles.
Down the road from Mt Rushmore is the Crazy Horse Memorial. The Native Americans of the area wanted a monument to one of their heroes. The Crazy Horse Memorial is a work in progress. The first blast was on June 3, 1948. It will be years before the mountain sculpture is complete.
The car performed flawlessly. Average mileage was 29.3. Not bad for the horsepower. We collected lots of smashed bugs every day. Other than that the car stayed pretty clean most of the trip. We got into construction and heavy rainstorms in SD and got oily dirt on the car. First order of business upon arrive home was a good washing. (Editors Note: The C6 cleaned up well and looked very good at the Lincoln College Car Show)
