Elkhart - Michiana Rallies 10/07
On what turned out to be a much better day than forecast two of the Northern Indiana clubs held a combined set of 6 rallies. Three were done by the Elkhart Vette Set and the other three by the Michiana Corvette club. Those heading up from Corvette Indy were perennial rally runners Butch & Tammy DeWitt and Bill & Erika Lapham along with Mark Hilligoss who was doing his first rally in a number of years. The three Corvettes met at the McClure station on 31 and 2 hours later were at the Farmer Market starting location. Once there Mark met up with Mike Godfrey who usually drives but became Mark's navigator for the day. Unfortunately even though the day was nice only a total of 5 Corvettes and 1 metal car took on the challenge of the day's events. Leaving from the Farmers Market just off of US 20 and IN 19 the first route wound it's way through Elkhart and into St. Joe county ending at Michigan road and US 6 area. From that check point the second set of rallies headed from St. Joe county in to LaPorte county and finally ending up at David Godfrey's house for the after event BBQ and award presentations. The wait took a little longer than usual as one couple had gotten lost enough that they had headed home before getting to the first check point. Unfortunately the check point workers were not told until later and it was a half hour drive from there to the BBQ. Once everyone was there the wrap up commenced and was a lot of fun. The two Corvette Indy couples did well with the DeWitt's winning one of the gimmick rallies and a poker rally while the Lapham's a poker rally with both doing well in the rest. Mark & Mike also had fun and were tied in several of the rallies for a good day of fun. Along with the awards a really nice goodies bag with lots of items including books and even a Frisbee was given to all of the competitors. The day was fun and it is unfortunate that more of the region's members don't enjoy the fun events. The ride home was also great with only getting caught by the rain as we got close to our homes.
