2020 Saturday Drive N Dunk
Drive N Dunk aka Cars & Coffee or Cars & Corvettes!
What has become our generally most attended event, other than meeting nights, the McAlister's South of 96th Street continues to be 'the' Saturday morning place for both men and women members of the club to gather. One never knows who will show up and which along with which Corvettes will be there. The morning events usually begin at around 9:00 and go to near noon depending on the crowd and how many Corvettes or other cars there are to view and how deep the discussions get. Members even drive their 'metal' car to the event to be a part of the group in all types of weather year around.
Conversation among Members and other car enthusiasts is always interesting and lively. With a number of tables inside for their coffee and discussions the members have even morphed in to separate guys and gals tables with discussion topics suited to each.

A good group of 5 zoomed in on a cold Saturday morning. With three of them being former telephone employees the day's main discussion talked about their climbing poles during their 'much' younger days. Also Wylie was congratulated on his and Rita's 50th Anniversary on Friday among other topics.

Today was not a 'normal' Saturday morning gathering at McAlister's Deli. Jimmie and Donna D stopped by to celebrate Jimmie's birthday. The group sang Happy Birthday to Jimmie and Donna proceeded to hand out cookies. It was great to see both of them. It was also great to see our friend Bob Young. Bob was on his way to Putnam Park to turn some laps. Fourteen Corvettes, twenty-five guys and ten ladies attended. Thanks to Jim Alvis for the pictures & write up.

Perhaps the largest Corvette Indy turnout ever for the Saturday morning Drive & Dunk took place this morning at McAlister’s Deli. Twenty-five Corvettes, including the new Elkhart Lake Blue C8 of Al and Maria Wopshall made for a very active morning. The three C8s of Steve H and John V and Al W were placed side by side for a photo opportunity.
As always thanks for Jim Alvis for the pictures and info of the day.

There was a strong turnout of Corvette Indy folks at McAlister's Deli on Saturday, October 3. John V. arrived in his two-day old C8 Retractable Hardtop Convertible that once again attracted a lot of attention. Four other club members are known to have C8s on order.

This week the McAlister's group was documented by Jim while the Zoom group was so busy talking that they forgot to get a picture. Here is Jim's report and pictures: Several of the Saturday morning regulars were missing at McAlister’s Deli. They were enjoying a great trip to Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel. This morning we were joined by two first time visitors; one with a new Rapid Blue C8 and the other with a very nice red 2005 C6 convertible. It was too cool to sit outside so we gathered inside for the first time in three months. As always, conversations were light and entertaining. The next club meeting is on Monday, September 28 at the Fishers American Legion.

The zoom meeting started with 3 then 4 from home while Wylie in his Corvette joined the group and finally a 'sleepy' Jimmy for a total of 6 online. Wylie had gone to the live McAlister's gathering to give John some membership checks and was headed home. Paul soon left to go to the Fishers Farmer market and was asked what type of farmer he was in the market for. Tom talked about his adventures with re carpeting his basement, it is not going well to say the least. Other talk included Jimmy and Bob reminiscing about bonfires for Halloween, some that Jimmie set and ones that Bob put out. Multiple other topics were discussed for a fun Saturday morning online.

On a beautiful cool morning the group started with 3 then 4 and finally 5 when Greg got back from his morning walk. Charlie started on his patio but got chased inside as a mowing crew showed up next door. Lots of topics discussed for a fun morning with some planning on getting their Corvettes out later in the day to enjoy the great weather.

On a sunny morning 5 of the members were on the call while several others were on the Lemonade drive. One of our topics was Jim talking about Bloomington Gold and what it will take to get Corvettes parked inside Lucas Oil. He will be helping on Wednesday and Thursday along with a few other members. There were also of course other topics of conversations and laughter throughout the morning. Left with all looking forward to next Saturday.

This morning’s gathering at McAlister’s Deli really did not ‘go to the dogs’, but to a casual observer it might have looked like it. Four members did bring their pride and joy dog for others to enjoy. The dogs got along pretty well and there were no doggie disagreements. The rest of us enjoyed another beautiful morning of Corvette camaraderie and friendship. This morning was the ninth consecutive Saturday morning to drive our Corvettes to McAlister’s. That must be a record. As always thanks to Jim Alvis for the report and pictures.

Another good morning of zooming as the group slowly gathered. Talked about the race as Charlie was hearing the blimp fly over and the discussion turned to where the Thunderbirds were parking before the race. Also talked about Larry's new C8 and other general subjects that get discussed on a sunny day.

Twenty-one Corvettes and one Camaro showed up on this beautiful Saturday morning. Two weeks ago Steve and Mary presented us with their new Sebring Orange C8. Today it was Larry G's turn. He had just picked up his new Elkhart Lake Blue C8 with Tension Blue seats. Who will be the next lucky CI member to receive a C8? We will find out eventually. We were very pleased to see Gary & Marian Cole back this morning and hope to see them regularly. Marian brought Bella, their very cute Shorkie to show everyone. Bella’s mom is a 15 lb Shih Tzu and Dad is a 6 lb Yorkshire Terrier. Folks were looking forward our meeting Monday evening at the American Legion Post in Fishers.

The Zoom group expanded with more requests for invitations to Tom. Our usual host Jim Shaver was again rubbing elbows with the Indy car drivers and owners as it was qualifying day at IMS. The discussion this morning included potential dates for C8 Z06 and Grand Sport models, with 2022 for the former and the GS a year later. Bob also gave an education on red poles with a white band and number on top along roads which denote how far a hydrant is from that point. These along with other tidbits filled up the 45 minutes of the call.

On a beautiful summer day the Zoom Saturday group got together with Jimmie soon joining with a new background picture of Steve's Orange C8 that had been at the live Saturday event. Jimmie is very excited about the color and so is wife Donna, a new C8 in their garage soon? The group then talked about the new car and other recent events. The call ended before a discussion had finished so a couple of them jumped back on to complete their thoughts.
Jim's report from the McAlister's Parking Lot
The big deal this morning was Steve head’s new C8.
The major excitement at this morning’s Drive & Dunk at McAlister’s was the appearance of Steve and Mary’s one-day old Sebring Orange Tintcoat C8. Among its many options is the 2 LT interior, GT 2 seats, and magnetic ride suspension. Folks flocked out to check it out more closely. Dave Roberts just ordered a 2021 C8 one week ago and was very pleased to have the opportunity to sit the new C8. Steve was very patient with the continuous stream of the questions. The Sebring Orange has a fine goldish metallic cast that really stands out in bright sunlight.
More C8s are on the way to club members.

On a very wet morning the Zoom group got off to a slow start as Jimmie's email had an incorrect number for the login due a typo by Tom. The group progressed from Tom & Bill to Wylie then Jimmie, John R, Charlie, John V, and Jewel making the call. Conversation went from weather, lawn draining and wondering how many were going to Lafayette and Mary's trip Sunday to Jewel announcing that he had a new '16 C7 that only had 2500 miles (now over 4k) on it. Look for it on the new babies section as soon as he sends pictures in. Then the discussion moved into looking for cheaper meeting locations, maybe going back to not worrying about having food at that location too. This would revert back to older times that Jewel spoke about as he had joined in 2002. Another good get together on a Saturday.

Nineteen Corvettes and their happy owners and passengers enjoyed a very nice Saturday morning at McAlister's Deli. Multiple conversations took place, a few of which included changes at the Legion on meeting nights and the upcoming Brown County day trip. It is always a fun time when Corvette Indy folks gather. Thanks to Jim Alvis for the report.
The smaller zoom group also met online to complete the busy Saturday morning.

Still had good conversations with Wylie recounting his nail hunting last night as the roofers are almost done with their project but had not done their final clean up. Also talked about different upcoming events. Wylie left early as Rita was making pancakes for them and their two visiting grandsons. Tom will continue hosting next week.

Jim's report today Today’s Drive and Dunk started out as a pretty routine Saturday morning at McAlister’s Deli. All of that changed when an Elkhart Lake Blue C8 pulled into the parking lot. Randy had seen our Corvettes at McAlister’s and decided to have a look. We are very glad he did as everyone’s attention quickly turned to the C8. Randy opened it up so folks could take a closer look and answered a lot of questions. John Herder gave Randy a club business card and invited him to check the club website and to join us on Saturday mornings. By the way, nineteen Corvette Indy Corvettes filled the back row of the parking lot.

A small group continues to do Saturday Zoom meetings. At the start of this one Jim Shaver even joined from IMS as he is working corners for the weekend. Unfortunately we didn't get a picture of him in his mask on for the event with the group, but he sent in a selfie after the race of his track day outfit. Jim said he had seen Roger Penske drive by and wave to him, he also talked about what he was doing on both days. Flagging for the road course races on Saturday and working in the pits with a fire extinguisher on Sunday's NASCAR race. Several of the group were heading to Noblesville later in the day for the 4th of July parade. Happy 4th of July to everyone.

With Jerry Zoom hosting along with Elaine from Ohio; Bill, Jim, and John after getting a revised invitation joined in on a stormy morning. Jerry got to see his mother for the first time in 6 months and it was real great time for them. He will be heading home on back roads today to enjoy the trip back. Discussions from there included taking more Zoom group drives and Jim being busy this coming week at IMS getting ready for their first racing weekend over the 4th & 5th unfortunately without any fans for either the Indy Car / Xfinity road course or Brickyard oval events.

Jim Alvis sent in the pictures and report: Here is my wet report from this morning
The string of six consecutive very nice Saturday mornings for driving our Corvettes to McAlister’s Deli came to an abrupt end today. In spite of the threatening weather however, two Corvettes showed up. Showers and then a thunderstorm moved in causing folks to abandon their seating along the edge of the patio. Shortly thereafter, the real deluge arrived, and everyone completely abandoned the patio for the air-conditioned comfort inside the restaurant. The conversations never missed a beat. One item discussed was the planned trip on August 2 to Brown County. Mary McConnell and the Herders are working on the details.

This morning’s turnout at McAlister’s Deli was very strong. Nineteen Corvettes and about thirty Corvette Indy members and guests had a great time. As restrictions are easing, more folks are getting out to socialize and enjoy the weather. One topic of discussion at the ‘technical’ table was the excellent service provided by Northwest Frame and Alignment. Aaron is very good at alignment and wheel balancing for Corvettes and other high-end performance vehicles. At another table, Bob Wilbert was busy answering a rotary-dial phone to replace his flip phone.

Another beautiful Saturday morning in Indy, perfect for a gathering of Corvette Indy members at McAlister’s Deli. Terry Adams showed off his new-to-him 2013 427 convertible. He had, I believe, a 2017 C7 coupe he traded for the low mileage 427 60th anniversary edition at an Atlanta dealer. Folks are glad to see the COVID-19 restrictions gradually being lifted, particularly at restaurants. Members still remain cautious and safe however.

On a beautiful Saturday morning 6 of the Corvette Indy members again met via Zoom, with Jerry hosting from Florida. He confirmed that they are not bringing back an alligator as Janet had reported last week on her Friday evening report. Good job Janet for the spoof. From there the discussion got into the different types of transponders and what roads that they are used on. They are becoming more useful as more roads and bridges that we encounter are requiring tolls. Generally having a transponder cuts the toll in half. Jerry and Elaine are now planning on returning next weekend, depending on the unrest as they travel through several of the cities having problems. As the meeting ended the group prepared to enjoy the beautiful Indiana weather while Jerry was looking at more rain coming.

Jerry's Zoom group met again on what is turning out to be a beautiful Saturday with most of the group planning a drive later in the day. Unfortunately Jerry will miss out as he still is in Florida but will be heading home next weekend. The main topic today was the pictures of the C8 that fell off of the service rack at a dealer. A big discussion of how the rear biased weight must be supported. See this video from Rick Conti here for more about it. Also talked about upcoming events and what would be allowed as the state opens up, as the Corvette Circle is still planned during the NCCC convention and Grissom running next week, among other things.

With our host Jerry Croy leading us from Florida, after a 16 hour drive there, the group again met virtually on what turned out to be a sunny Saturday morning. John Vess joined a few minutes late as he had just gotten back from doing the first leg of the Meatball Rally, which ended up having 800 entrants. Bill Reynolds along with Jimmy & Donna Driscoll were also doing the run. While on the Zoom meeting Jim Shaver said he was seeing a number of the cars drive by as we were meeting. Ray Chester joined in from McAlisters, as a small group had met in the parking lot there also, but were told that the restaurant was not officially open until next week.

Given a beautiful Saturday morning, what could be better than a few CI members showing up at McAlister's Deli for an impromptu real-time outside 'meeting'. Folks brought their own coffee, tea, or sandwich, practiced safe distancing, and enjoyed the camaraderie we have missed for the past seven weeks. The Marion County, IN 'stay-at-home' order has been extended through Friday, May 15 by the Indianapolis Mayor, so restaurants can open up with restrictions on Saturday May 16.

There was also a ladies meeting at 11:00 plus a few die hard members in the McAlister's lot at around 9 getting coffee brought out to them.

With a light snow falling a good group headed to McAlisters with much talk about Phil's new C8 arrival.

After weeks of no pictures "it finally happened" as Bill Reynolds sent in several with Corvettes in the lot and the group at the tables enjoying the very sunny but cool morning. Soon the weather will break fully and the lot will be full, maybe even with a C8 or 2 as at least one club member's has been built and soon to be shipped.

It was rainy and dreary outside, but it was warm and friendly at McAlister's Deli for the weekly gathering of Corvette Indy members and guests. As always, plenty of stimulating, educational, humorous, and occasionally some serious conversation. Thanks again to Jim Alvis for the pictures and write up.

An unseasonably warm (59°) but very wet Saturday morning did not deter about twenty-five Corvette Indy members from participating in the weekly Drive & Dunk at McAlister's Deli. As always, a wide range of informative and entertaining conversations going on, all at once. Thanks to Jim Alvis for the pictures and write up.
