Main Event - Track Prep Day 2 - 05/15
With a very short notice Saturday evening 6 members headed to the new location on Sunday morning to lay out a plan for the track and actually run cars in the dry to check out conditions and potential issues. Those attending were current and past competition directors, Cathy Coolidge, Frank Coolidge, and Mike Gilbert, governor Butch DeWitt, with Bill Lapham representing the timing team, and Tammy DeWitt who works the staging area during Main and other Indiana Region Events. The three competition directors and Butch have run in many of the region's autocross events over the past years. They are very aware of the requirements for the safe and also fast course that can be laid out on an area as large as the club has to work with this year. After driving over the pavement several areas were ruled out as too broken down, while other had too many dips while running at speed. A sample course was then laid out and test run by all of the assembled drivers and then tweaked after each run. Cones were also put out and the cars run against cell phone timers to see what the course might run. Generally the times were in the mid 60's with one certainly unofficial high 50. The test layout was marked with a bit of paint so it can easily be setup the next time out as a starting track. Once the final configuration is done on setup Friday we should have a very competitive track for all of the region's competitors that come for this year's 27th Annual Event.
