Thursday at Mecum Friday's Bargain Blaster & More Friday Evening at Mecum
On Tuesday, May 13th, Greg B, Al F and Jim F took off after a rain storm for the start of the MECUM annual Indy auctions. Getting there was event free and as we entered the Fair Grounds things were looking good as the parking toll collectors seemed to have fallen down on the job and Al drove like he owned the joint so we actually did pass go and got free parking! We parked in the infield and then went through the tunnel to go under the track. We were relieved to see they had just finished pumping the rain water flooding from the tunnel so we did not have to snorkel across. Greg had scored some day passes through his friend Nathan Sheets from Lingenfelter and Nathan met the group once they arrived at the fairgrounds. They visited a little outside and when they went to enter they were told that Mecum had shut down for the day and that Nathan could reenter but they were not allowing any more entrants that day because they had run out of cars to auction. Sometimes it is who you know so a quick call from Nathan to a friend that was supervising the gate guards got us access through a side door and we saved our day pass for another day!
We spent the rest of the afternoon looking at some great cars and included in those were a lot of neat Vettes! While we were roaming around we ran into Nathan again and this time he was looking at a ZR1 with Ken Lingenfelter that Ken was thinking about adding to his collection. Nathan is planning to sell about a dozen cars from the collection this week as the collection frequently adds and drops cars to keep it changing and always interesting. Greg officially welcomed Ken to Corvette Indy and Ken inquired about the track events and what opportunities there were this year.
There were some interesting moments like when Jim was talking to a lady from Arkansas whose husband had restored a rare C2 to award winning status and Jim told her it was so nice it could bring 6 figures and he wouldn't be surprised if it brought $75,000 to $100,000. Greg noticed the ladies face was twisted in pain and commented that he thought it would bring even more. Jim said you mean like $125,000? Greg added that he thought more like $150,000 to $200,000. Greg later admitted he didn't have a clue what the car would bring but he was trying to keep the lady from stroking out or worse yet, hurting Jim. A little later in the conversation the lady let slip that they were hoping for $250,000! It is a Saturday, 4:30pm car so it'll be interesting to see what it brings!
We roamed around some more and we all fell in love with some sexy models with great headlights more than once. One that Greg couldn't stop staring at was a 20 year old sexy little thing with creamy smooth skin and wrinkle free upholstery! The C4 ZR1 he got the hots for had 60 actual miles on it and looked like it was still in the show room. Nice!
After a fun afternoon we headed for home and the only out of the ordinary event on the way back was when Al stopped on the inside lane on Meridian Street a very upset young lady in her way too big for her to handle SUV stopped in the right lane a few feet back from Al and started honking her horn repeatedly. After a few moments of confusion we finally figured out that she wanted to pass Al but she was afraid there wasn't enough room. Now make no mistake about it, Al was in his own lane and she had a good 3 feet of clearance between her SUV and Al's vehicle. We encouraged Al to make the ultimate sacrifice and pull into the oncoming traffic to give her safe passage but he refused. She finally mustered her courage and went around Al with her two right wheels up over the curb just to be on the safe side. We proceeded home without any problem after the light change and we can only hope the driver of the year did too!
Al plans to return on Saturday to Mecum, Greg will probably go back Friday night and Jim may not return as he is off somewhere dancing with visions of sugar plums in his head as he received word today that his and Shelley's new baby was born yesterday and the stork may drop it by as early as Friday! Stay tuned race fans as I'm sure there is more news to come on our expectant parents and their newborn babe! Hopefully they will have her in time to bring her to Saturday's Drive N Dunk or debut her at the Indy 500 track on Sunday!
