Friday Evening at Mecum
Greg, Barry, Chris, & Jeff tackled Mecum on Friday Evening - Greg's Account follows with Jeff's Pictures Below.
On Friday evening Greg left to pick up Barry R to go to the Mecum auction and meet Chris (aka SP, aka the Witt) W. Greg soon found out you couldn't get to Keystone from his house. There was an accident on I-465 that had shut down the south bound lanes and that combined with the Meridian Street closure had traffic on the north side incredibly bad! Greg spent several lights trying to get from Spring Mill to Meridian and finally made Illinois Street and ducked south and then over to Meridian and then east on 75th Street. That was backed up and stalled so he eventually made a u-turn and went north on Penn then east on 77th and north on College hoping to get back to a cleared out 86th St. Wrong! North to 91st Street and east to Haverstick. Once he turned south on Haverstick it became Haverstuck as it was backed up from 86th Street to 91st and only about 2 or 3 vars were turning at each light opportunity. After a long visit on that road he eventually got to the light only to watch the gal in the SUV ahead of him sit through 3 consecutive lights without turning. On the 4th she got brave and moved a little and Greg got around her on the right and finally got to Keystone. There he found Keystone backed up and he limped down to 75th before it began to clear. Barry had lost weight waiting for his ride and SP had given up and went in and joined forces with Jeff B. Finally over an hour late and after traveling well over an hour and a half for a 10 minute trip they made it. As they walked up to buy tickets Mecum had closed the ticket booth but they waived them in free of charge so that part was okay!
At Mecum there was lots of neat cars to drool over. We got to watch 3 of Ken Lingenfelter's cars go across the block and sell.
Greg's hard hearing kicked in as they attempted to gain access to the Gold bidders area. An alert guard stopped them just after entering. Greg apparently failed to see the attendant as he must have been looking left. The attendant apparently must have said "excuse me sir" and Greg's old age hearing must have kicked in. SP and Jeff tried to help out by yelling Greg but he was by that time too far away to hear. Greg called SP later from the Gold section on his cell phone to his rule abiding partners in crime and caught them in the upper deck bleacher seats.
Eventually the 4 of us wandered around checking out the cars until the bidding stopped and we decided to head for home. It was fun but we didn't have as much fun as Wylie & Rita who purchased a 1993 40th Anniversary low mileage convertible at the auction earlier that day! See it at a meeting or car show!
