Northern Indiana Sunday 7/30
With 11 AM reservation for brunch at Tippecanoe Place Mansion in South Bend, the group did not need to gather as early to leave. Just to be sure they were there on time, of course the group left the Inn around 9:30 to traverse the 50 minute trip. They arrived early enough to enjoy the grounds and massive building that comprised the what was the Studebaker family home mansion and now Tippecanoe Place restaurant. The route there was rather simple, South on IN 5 to West on US 20 then up Michigan street and then west on Washington. Several members of the 18 Corvette group got blocked by traffic on Michigan and found an alternate route, but all made it in plenty of time. Once inside the group was seated in what was the sun room porch, which was conveniently right next to the massive buffet. Multiple trips to the buffet were taken and once done many toured the multiple floors of the mansion. The architecture and workmanship of that time period is amazing. At around noon everyone that wanted to continued the few blocks over to the Studebaker National Museum which also houses the separate South Bend History Museum which also includes a Notre Dame exhibit. The Studebaker museum comprises three floors with the main floor showing much of the early Studebaker wagon heritage and other fascinating exhibits. The second floor mainly has Studebaker and other automobiles while the basement has some of the military equipment made by Studebaker along with storage of vehicles that are under restoration. All in all a great afternoon of strolling and working off lunch. The group then headed for the Indianapolis area and other locals as they finished the tours on their own pace. Jimmie and Donna even made it to the Warren Dunes in time for sunset (last picture on the page).
