FCOA Race Winner
One of our FCOA members is a true Race Winner, not an Autocross or Rallye but a Pine Wood Derby put on by his Cub Scout Pack!
On Saturday March 13 FCOA (Future Corvette Owners Association) member Mitchell Kuhn, grandson of Bill & Erika Lapham, entered Cub Scout Pack 124's Pine Wood Derby Day with his blue Pine Wood racer. After getting a minor adjustment for being above the 5oz maximum weight his car was impounded and awaited his first set of heats with the rest of his Wolf Den members. There were four sets of races, one for each of the three dens and a race for Webelos members. As can be seen from the pictures a Pine Wood Derby track is much longer and a lot more technical than when they first started in 1953 along with the electric timing and scoring that is now used. Multiple heats make up the racing for each group, with points scored in an inverse manner, 0 for 1st, 1 for 2nd, 2 for third, & 3 for 4th. After a car reaches 5 points they are taken out of competition. In Mitchell Den's heats he had a tough competitor and they went back and forth between first and second place in each heat, with Mitchell finally winning the last race to take his Den's Trophy. In the final six heats against the other three sets of winners he only had one where he came in 2nd and therefore won the overall Pack Trophy. We all thought that his competitor from his den might have come in second (or first) overall if allowed to run. All four of the winners have been invited to the Cub Scout Regional race on April 20.
It was a fun day for all of the scouts, parents and grandparents that enjoyed the rousing event.
