GM Heritage & More 8/15
On Wednesday the group headed to the GM Heritage Center to see what 160 some vehicles were on display out of the more than 800 that is in their inventory from over the years of GM production. This event along with the charity food drive later in the day is planned by Larry Courtney as part of the Corvette on Woodward event. The drive to the Heritage center was in morning traffic, so an interesting trip in heavy traffic of the Detroit area. Once there the group was greeted by Larry and soon let into the very private museum. The collection is outstanding and a real cross section of GM production through out the years. For many of the members they saw some cars very near the ones they first learned to drive on or at least covet in their younger years. Towards the end of the morning Harlan Charles gave a short talk about the ZR1 and then took a number of questions .. but no answers about ones on the C8!
Once done at the center the group headed off to Buddy's Pizza, as we all know this is an eating club that also happens to own Corvettes. Once there two of Elaine's three sisters met us there to enjoy the great lunch and early afternoon of laughter and tail telling. After eating the group headed back to the hotel for a bit of rest before heading to the Masonic Lodge on Woodward, which was the meeting spot for Larry's big event of the day. While there pictures were taken and everyone even sat under the tent that had been setup for viewing of Woodward. While there we also got to talk to Ken and Kristen Lingenfelter who where there with their White and Yellow ZR1s supporting Larry's event. At 7:30 the nearly 500 Corvettes that were assembled headed down Woodward towards the Open Hands Food Pantry, the recipient of Larry's food drive. Elaine had originally made reservations at the Moose Preserve Bar and Grill for 8:45, but decide to move it up to 8:00. The group soon made a Michigan left turn to go back up Woodward to the restaurant. This turned out to be a fortunate move as at 8:45, while eating, it started to pour out. We were dry and the Corvettes got a quick bath. A side note of the evening, while walking in to the restaurant, the stop light at the corner turned green and at least 6 of the lanes soon had smoking tires and cars running each other in both directions. Bill then commented to Jerry that "this if the Woodward that he remembered" as he and Erika had lived in the Detroit area in the early '70's and used to cruise Woodward on many Saturday evenings. Up until that point the street had been very calm. Unfortunately with the evenings rain the stop light contests were limited as the group headed back to the hotel for the evening to rest up for the next day's adventures a Lingenfelter's car collection in Brighton.
