Northern Indiana Route Check 07/26
With the Northern Indiana trip coming up on the weekend and possible road closures Bill & Erika Lapham decided to make a route road check of the route they had scouted the month before. That had been with the other two couples John & Marg Herder along with Steve Head & Marry McConnell who were unable to go along on Wednesday. Because of that and the fact that the weather was to be great Bill & Erika opened the one day trip up to all club members with two taking the invitation. They were Jack Houtman, who is also going along on the weekend, and Keith Riley who is not making the weekend trip. The group met at the Shell station on 151st and US 31, the starting location for the weekend trip too. From there they headed up US 31 to US 24 and then shortly turned on to IN 19. This time instead of waiting until reaching Pierceton for a stop they went off route a 1/10 of a mile and found gas station that could be used. Once back underway they followed IN 14 to In 13 and from there into Syracuse and then went by the Channel Maker, Saturday's lunch stop. They then wound their way over to IN 5 and up towards Shipshewana. After multiple expected warnings they got to the spot where the road was actually closed and were able to take county roads around it. Instead of heading into town, they continued West on IN 20 towards Middlebury and Das Essenhaus, what will be the Saturday evening dinner location. There they had a great lunch and both Jack and Keith purchased several baked items from the huge bakery. The trip continued West on US 20 and finally South on US 31 with a stop near Rochester. Note Keith did get gas as this stop, but since it was only 8 gallons he did NOT earn a gas can award. As can be seen from the GPS shot, the trip was a little over 300 miles and barley over 7 1/2 hours of driving and dining, what any Corvette Indy member should want to do to enjoy their Corvette and friendship of other members.
