SE Indiana Trip 7/21~7/22
Another summer and and another GREAT trip planned by the three couples to give Corvette Indy members a chance to explore Indiana. The couples are Steve Head & Mary McConnell, John & Marg Herder, and Bill & Erika Lapham and they used Mary's knowledge of southern Indiana to plan a trip to Rising Sun and stay at the casino to see an evening show and then on Sunday head to Belterra Terra Casino for a fabulous brunch. This trip started in Morristown at the Kopper Kettle with everyone arriving by 10:30 and most of them in Corvettes, even though it was a wet weekend. The few in metal cars all had valid excuses such as Eileen's back problem, new wheels coming for John's upgrade to his C1, the Cole's visiting family grave sites in cemeteries on Sunday with really muddy roads, and Jack had our token Cadillac as he still is a true Corvette enthusiast! We even had one couple Harry & Tillie race home to get there Corvette once they found that a vast majority were driving theirs. This even included Tom's absolutely new Blue Grand Sport of less than 24 hours from being delivered on Friday and arriving at our jumping off point with around 60 miles. What a trouper, others in the group will not be named is case they still want to claim that "their Corvette has never been in the rain" NOT. Once everyone had finished their great lunch the 27 vehicles were split into 2 groups and headed down IN 52 and the long way to the first stop of Metamora, from there back through Oldenburg and many points south to Rising Sun. Be sure to read Mary's directions which are attached in a PDF, to see the full route and many points of interest comments. Once at the evening's lodging everyone started playing room key roulette (remember it is part of a casino) as a majority had multiple keys not work even after exchanging them! A pain, but finally everyone got in their rooms. They soon headed over to the main casino for dinner and most to see the '70's group America in concert that evening. In the morning there was a quick drivers meeting and then everyone headed off to Belterra via scenic route along the Ohio river. After the great brunch, food is always a theme in Corvette Indy event, everyone was on their own as far as more planned activities. Mary had sent out a 'what to see and do' in Madison for anyone wanting to go there and check the city out. A fairly large group decided to stop at the first winery they went by, while others headed for home and other destinations. Unfortunately the ones that headed to Madison found fairly fresh chip n seal so ended up making a very slow 15 mph trip through it, upsetting a number of metal cars in the process. For those heading through Versailles Mary had mentioned an Art Deco style church there which Bill was able to get pictures of on the way home. A great trip for everyone and again less than a tank of gas used for most everyone. So plan a trip in your Corvette and see Indiana, the three couples are already planning next years!
