Gold Tour 06/27
The final event of Bloomington Gold is their annual Gold Tour which is a long drive through the country side near each year's event. With this the first year of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the location it was a challenge to come up with a route. The challenge was met by Corvette Indy members who came up with several routes including one that had the mandatory town square where a loop back of the route could be done. The tours loop destination became Danville with it returning to Plainfield's Metropolios Mall for an overall length of 45 plus miles. The preparation was amazing as Bloomington Gold had to have coordination from multiple city and county police forces. This year's tour group was over 700 cars which stretched for miles, and the blocking of the many intersections also crated miles of backed up traffic. The start was from the Corvette parking to the outside of the track and back around to the North entrance to then allow entrance around the East side and then on to the track. Once on the track another quick lap much like the Chevy events and we were on our way out to 16th street tunnel and Crawfordsville road. One issue during the lap what that Jim S was told by radio that he had a tail lamp hanging, he stopped and found that indeed it was hanging as only one screw had been holding the assembly in. Unplugging it he got on his way without loosing too much time. The Gold Club members were near the front with the main part of the Corvette Indy club nearer the middle of the pack. We did have a participant at the 634th spot in the procession (as reported by a curbside watcher) taking pictures too. The tour is simply amazing and the number of people along the route with their lawn chairs was really great. Danville was packed with onlookers as were other towns along the lengthy route.
Several of the members enjoyed the restaurants available at the mall while others headed home after the long day at IMS.
