Main Event 2017 - Saturday 04/29
Saturday unfortunately dawned WET.. but since autocross goes on no matter what the weather the Corvette Indy members started setting everything up. The two new Penske / Corvette Indy canopies and the much appreciated 10 x 20 tent with sides were erected and then tied to the nearby fence by the already damp members. As the day progressed it was found that the new canopies were really just sun shades as they were not waterproof, fortunately the new tent was and kept the food dry. Once the tents and tables were up the registration was opened and raffle items were set out the racers started to sign up and buy their tickets. Due to the weather the driver count ended up at 29, with most planning on running both days for the coveted Indiana and National NCCC points. Since the rain had slowed down some soon Jerry headed out to track with his blower trying to clean it as best that he could. Others setup a canopy by the start line and made the final adjustments to lights and other track items. With the dampness and cleaning the start got a bit delayed. But as the morning progressed the rain stopped and by afternoon the track was dry enough that the course turned black and was much quicker. With the damp track start and a few timing issues thrown in the day's events went to around 4:30. The afternoon end of the event was followed by a dinner provided and paid for by Tammy & Butch for the assembled racers and any of the workers who wanted to stay. The hamburgers, hot dogs, and many salads along with deserts brought by members made for a great wrap up to the day's soggy event. We also want to thank Mike & Jeannie Bell of Hoosier CC for the use of their trailer to keep the timing sheets DRY and Jeannie helping with the posting and getting wet with the rest of the Corvette Indy members running the golf cart to and from the timing trailer.
During the day Bill took a few pictures to prove 'that it happened' but fortunately Jim Shaver was roaming the track and documenting the Saturday event, even taking one for the team as he fell over a cone while trying to get a spin out at the finish line! The police car at the day's end took a few 'fun runs' with Butch along for one of them. He found out that a number of the Corvettes might be a bit quicker, but his times were competitive!
